Sunday Hike – McDowell Sonoran Preserve & McDowell Mountain Park

Marilyn and I hiked eight miles in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve and McDowell Mountain Park.  We hiked the following trails (in order): Marcus Landslide, Rock Knob, Pemberton, Gooseneck, Rock Knob, Marcus Landslide, Feldspar, Tom’s Thumb.

Friday Fitness Hike

Bob and I hiked in the Tom’s Thumb area on Friday. We hiked perhaps 7 miles with a total ascent of 2500 feet.

Friday Fitness Hike

On Friday’s hike, Janet, Linda, Bob, and I hiked from the Tom’s Thumb Trailhead to Gardener’s Wall, and then from Gardener’s Wall to Tom’s Thumb. We then proceeded to the top of the East End Trail. We had planned to do a route down the East End Trail, but it had begun raining fairly hard, so we headed back down the Tom’s Thumb Trail instead, for a hike that was somewhat under five miles.

Friday Hike – Granite Mountain

We did an 8+ mile route on Friday, March 20 starting at the Granite Mountain Trailhead. We hiked the following trails: Bootlegger, Saddlehorn, (left on) Granite Mountain Loop, Balanced Rock, (right on) Cholla Mountain Loop, Branding Iron, (left on) Granite Mountain Loop, and (back on) Bootlegger.

The Bootlegger Trail passes through these large boulders:

20150320-_DSC2849-Edit-medium

A heart shaped rock can be seen from the Bootlegger Trail.  On the way out, you have to turn around to see it. It’s easier to find when returning to the trailhead.  Fortunately, Linda was our guide; she let us know when it was time to look back to see it.

20150320-_DSC2867_8_8_8_9-Edit_copy-medium

Another view from the Bootlegger Trail.  The segment of Bootlegger from the Trailhead to the intersection with Saddlehorn is only about 3/4 mile long and is very scenic.  It makes an excellent mile and a half hike for just about anyone.

I think these photos might have been taken from the Saddlehorn Trail:

Friday Fitness Hike

Friday’s hike started at the Tom’s Thumb Trailhead at the end of 128th St.  We hiked up to Tom’s Thumb and then took the Tom’s Thumb Trail east to the Scottsdale side of the mountain. We hiked down to the Windgate Trail and then took Windgate back up through Windgate Pass until we reached the East End Trail. We took the East End back to the Tom’s Thumb Trail and followed the Tom’s Thumb Trail back to the parking area. Total distance was 10.3 miles with over 3200 feet of total ascent.

This was the view shortly after leaving the trailhead:

Friday Fitness Hike

Below are photos from last week’s hike on the Dixie Mine, Sonoran, Promenade, Western Loop trails. (We also hiked a short section of the Andrews-Kinsey trail.)  Linda and I hiked a little over 10 miles. The others turned back while still on the Sonoran Trail, hiking around seven miles total.

Linda suggested several of these shots. We both thought that the colors of the spurge (reddish ground cover) and brittlebush were interesting. (Note to Linda: When doing color correction on these photos, checking the values in Lab color space,I found that brittlebush leaves have a < 0 (green) and b > 0 (yellow) where b is roughly –a. This is why brittlebush looks “bluer” than a lot of other desert foliage, most of which have a b that’s significantly greater than that recommended for healthy foliage elsewhere. Note to others: Linda listened politely and patiently while I explained Lab color space.)

I think this is desert misletoe. Both Linda and I thought it was an unusual color, but it could be stressed either due to cold or perhaps death of the host plant.

Friday Fitness Hike

Last Friday’s hike started at the Dixie Mine Trailhead. We hiked Dixie Mine to Sonoran and took Sonoran until it joined with the Promenade Trail. At that point, Linda, Janet, Charles, Angel, and Marilyn turned back for a 7.8 mile hike. Bob and I continued on. We hiked up the Western Loop Trail, stopped briefly at the overlook and then continued on down the Western Loop Trail. We then took the recently constructed Andrews-Kinsey Trail to the Sunrise Trail. We hiked to the top of Sunrise Peak and then returned to the Fountain Hills side by retracing our steps on the Andrews-Kinsey Trail. Altogether, we hiked a little over 15 miles with 2800 feet of total ascent.

This is a view from the Sonoran Trail, somewhat before reaching the Preserve.

Friday Fitness Hike

Last Friday’s hike started from the Tom’s Thumb Trailhead. We hiked a route that took us up to the East End, the highest point in the McDowells. When we finished, Bill and I hiked into the Rock Knob Trail into McDowell Mountain Park.

The trail crosses some large boulders. This was a difficult spot for Linda.
