For Sunday’s hike, I hiked the Y Bar Trail, which starts at the Barnhardt Trailhead. I hiked out a little over four miles and turned around at the saddle / ridge that separates Shake Tree Canyon from Y Bar Basin. I ended up with 8.6 miles and a total ascent of 2460 feet.

Interesting path. Was this an old mining trail?

Either that or an old ranching trail? (The description on HAZ doesn’t go into the history, so I don’t really know.)

Looks like it was a work out with the elevation climb but that is how you get the great pictures!

Great hike. A friend and I started from that trailhead and hiked and hiked and almost got lost. We went to the north from trailhead, looped and looped , down creeks, and bushwhacked our way back Nothing like your hike. Thanks. Jon L

The trail must have changed for the better since when you did it. Although I had loaded the GPS route for it into my watch, I never needed it. The trail was fairly obvious until just before the ridge where I turned around – and even there it wasn’t too bad.
