I don’t quite know how that happened. I thought I was coming upon a rock, but when I got within maybe four feet of it, I realized that it was a bird. It stuck around while I fumbled about with my camera, getting it back into settings that I could use for a hand-held shots versus the tripod shots that I had taken perhaps 10 minutes earlier. Anyway, I lit it with both my headlamp and the flashlight that I was carrying.
I saw a few other birds along the trail too, but they all flew off before I got close.
