Saturday Hike – North Trail

On Saturday morning, I hiked the North Trail with Bob and his dogs. (I hiked part way with Sandra and her friends too.)

One of the ladies spotted this tarantula early in the hike:

The twisty-armed saguaro caught my attention:

Look for the (Harris ?) hawk atop the saguaro in the distance…

Sandy and Chaco

After our Friday Hike, a number of us stopped by the visitor’s center.  There, we found Ranger Amy talking to (and taking photos of) Sandy and her eclectus parrot, Chaco.  Sandy rides long distances on her mountain bike with Chaco perched on her shoulder.

After taking the photos of Sandy riding with Chaco, she passed Chaco over to Linda to hold…

Whenever I visit the North Trail, this cardinal or one like him attacks the mirrors on either my vehicle or some other parked at the trailhead lot.  When I last visited, it was attacking the mirrors of a Sheriff’s vehicle. In this photo, he’s sitting on the passenger side mirror of my truck.

Owl Release at McDowell Mountain Park

Amy released a pair of owls at the Nursery Tank on Saturday night.  These were young owls who had been either injured or abandoned.  Amy hopes that these owls will stay in the park, hopefully near the Nursery Tank.

This is Nick, the male owl.

Fountain Lake Waterfowl

I saw this duck and two of its friends close to where I had parked.  Amy tells me that the ducks are all Mallards except for the white ones.  She says that those are barnyard ducks / Mallard hybrids.

I then walked around the Fountain Lake looking for more birds to photograph, but did not see many until I found this one hanging out by herself.

I continued around the lake, not seeing any birds.  It turned out that many of them were gathered around this guy who was feeding them.

Good catch!

2013-08-18-DSC05795-medium Amy has identified this white bird as a Great Egret.

This one wasn’t really flying – it was just sort of hopping around.  It’s a shame that it wasn’t in better focus.  Amy says it’s a Grackle.

Amy tells me that the large bird is a Canada Goose.  The small one is a Red-winged Blackbird.
